Fire can happen to anyone!

NEVER say NEVER! Fire can happen to ANYONE! Ede's fire services are hoping to draw your attention to a very important topic soon using this slogan. Checks have shown that many students who are renting rooms are not bothered enough about fire safety. We have even come across students who have said that there won't be a fire in student accommodation in Ede, because that only happens in the big cities!?!?!

"Utterly ridiculous, of course," is the opinion of all four of the Fire Prevention staff who monitor the safe use of buildings in the municipality of Ede. The fire department is called out to domestic fires in Arnhem regularly too, caused by kitchen fires, deep fat fryers, tumble driers or people messing with the electrics.

Fire prevention officer Steven van Rijn says, "A comment like that says it all. Students have got to realise that they also have a big part to play in their own safety, along with the landlord and the fire services. The fire department checks the building, the landlord makes sure that the building is safe, and the student makes sure that the domestic situation is safe." The last of these is not always the case, as can be seen from the numerous items that are reported during the checks. Blocked corridors, defective smoke detectors, even barbecues indoors... just asking for trouble.
